Q:

Are Dobermans good family dogs?

Hi everyone,

I am considering getting a Doberman as a family dog, but I have some concerns about their temperament and behavior. I have a family with young children, so safety is my top priority. I have heard mixed reviews about Dobermans - some say they are great family dogs and very loyal, while others say they can be aggressive and difficult to train.

I am also worried about their size and energy levels. We live in an apartment, so I am not sure if a Doberman would be happy or comfortable in that environment. However, I am also very active and enjoy taking my dogs on long walks and hikes.

I would appreciate any input from Doberman owners or experts on whether or not they think this breed would be a good fit for us as a family dog. Thank you!

Hello,

I have owned several Dobermans over the years and I can definitely say that they make great family dogs. They are highly intelligent and need plenty of mental stimulation, which makes them easy to train. They are also very loyal and protective of their families, which is great for those who place a high value on safety.

That being said, it's important to note that Dobermans are a high-energy breed and require a lot of exercise. They aren't well-suited to living in an apartment or confined space. They need plenty of room to run around and play, so a house with a large yard would be ideal.

In terms of temperament, Dobermans can be quite stubborn and independent-minded. They need a firm but fair hand when it comes to training, and socialization with other dogs and people is essential to prevent aggressive behavior.

Overall, I think Dobermans can make great family dogs as long as the owners are willing to put in the effort to properly train and exercise them. They are loyal, intelligent, and protective dogs that will bring joy and companionship to any family.

Hey there,

I've also owned a Doberman in the past and I believe they can be great family dogs if trained and socialized properly. However, I think it's important to note that they have a strong prey drive and can be quite protective of their families, which could be a concern if you have other pets or small children.

If you plan to get a Doberman, make sure you have the time and patience to commit to their training and exercise needs. As an active breed, they require daily exercise and mental stimulation, so taking long walks or going on hikes would be a great way to keep them happy and healthy.

I lived in an apartment with my Doberman for a brief period of time, but found that it was quite difficult to meet his exercise needs in that environment. They need a lot of space to run around and play, so keep that in mind when deciding to get this breed.

In summary, I think Dobermans can make great family dogs as long as you are prepared to put in the effort to train and exercise them properly. It's important to consider their temperament and exercise needs before making a decision to get a Doberman as a family pet.

Hi!

I've owned a Doberman for a few years now and I have to say that they make fantastic family dogs. They're incredibly loyal, protective, and intelligent. My Doberman has been great with my young children - he's always been patient and gentle with them.

In terms of exercise, Dobermans are incredibly energetic dogs that require a lot of physical activity. I found that taking him on walks or runs in the park was a great way to burn off some of his energy. They are also very smart and eager to please, so training them isn't difficult as long as you're consistent and use positive reinforcement.

As for living in an apartment, I have to say that it can be challenging for such an active dog. However, if you are willing to put in the time and effort to make sure they get enough exercise and mental stimulation then it's definitely doable.

Overall, I think Dobermans are great family dogs if you're willing to put in the time and effort to train and exercise them properly. They are loving, loyal, and protective dogs that will make a great addition to any family.

Hello everyone,

I have owned a Doberman for about three years now and I can confidently say that they make excellent family dogs. They are known for their loyalty, intelligence, and affectionate nature, which makes them great with children.

Training a Doberman can be a bit challenging due to their stubborn nature, but with patience and the right training methods, they can be quite obedient. I recommend starting training and socialization as early as possible to prevent problems down the line.

One thing to keep in mind, however, is that Dobermans are high-energy dogs that require plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. They are not great apartment dogs and need a lot of space to run around and play, so it's important to have a large fenced yard or access to a dog park.

In terms of temperament, I have found my Doberman to be very affectionate and eager to please. They can be protective around strangers and other dogs, but with proper socialization, this should not be an issue.

Overall, I think Dobermans can make wonderful family dogs as long as their exercise and training needs are met. They are loving and loyal companions that will bring joy and happiness to any household.

Hi there!

I am a proud owner of a Doberman and I can assure you that they are amazing family dogs. They are incredibly loyal, loving, and protective of their families. I have two young children and my Doberman has always been gentle and patient with them.

In terms of training, they are very intelligent and eager to learn. With consistency and positive reinforcement, my Doberman quickly picked up on obedience commands and tricks. However, it is important to socialize them early on and give them plenty of exercise to prevent any behavioral issues.

As for living in an apartment, it can be challenging as they are quite active and require daily exercise. But, if you are committed to giving your Doberman the necessary exercise and mental stimulation, then they will thrive in any living situation.

Overall, I highly recommend a Doberman as a family dog. They are wonderful companions that will bring joy and love to your family.

Hi there,

As an owner of a Doberman for the last two years, I can say that they can make great family dogs if raised with young children. From my experience, Dobermans can be very patient, loving, and gentle with kids.

One of the main challenges with owning a Doberman, however, is their high energy levels. They need plenty of exercise, both physically and mentally, to stay healthy and happy. As an apartment dweller, I found that regular walks and trips to a nearby park were enough to keep my Doberman happy.

It's also important to note that Dobermans have a natural inclination to be a watchdog, which is another reason why socialization and training is important. They can be protective of their home and family, which is a good thing, but it needs to be balanced with friendly and social behavior around strangers.

Lastly, while Dobermans can be great family dogs, they have some health issues to watch out for. Some common health problems include hip dysplasia, heart problems, and skin allergies. Regular vet visits and proper care can help prevent or manage these issues.

In summary, I believe that Dobermans can make great family dogs with the right care and attention. They are loyal, affectionate, and protective dogs that can bring a lot of joy and love to a family.
