Q:

Are Dobermans good family pets?

Hi everyone,

I am currently considering getting a Doberman and I'm wondering if they make good family pets. I've always admired their physique and intelligence, but I've heard mixed opinions about their temperament. I want a dog that would not only be a loyal companion, but also get along with my kids and other pets. Are Dobermans good with children? Do they require a lot of attention and exercise? Any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi,

I’ll throw in my two cents here. I’ve owned Dobermans for many years and I would say that they can be great family pets. However, you should be prepared for a lot of work when it comes to training and socializing them.

Dobermans are intelligent dogs that need firm and consistent training from an early age. They require a lot of socialization to prevent them from becoming aggressive towards people or other animals.

While they can be loving with children, they can also be too rough and excitable, so it’s important to supervise children and teach them how to interact with the dog in a calm manner.

Dobermans require plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. They have a lot of energy and need plenty of outlets that allow them to exert that energy. They love long walks, playing fetch, and other outdoor activities. If you are not prepared to provide them with a lot of exercise, they may become bored and frustrated, leading to destructive behavior.

In conclusion, Dobermans can be great family pets, but they require a lot of work and commitment. They need proper training, socialization, exercise, and mental stimulation to thrive. If you are willing to put in the effort, you can end up with a well-behaved, loyal, and loving companion.

Hello everyone,

I have owned Dobermans for over a decade and I can say that they can make great family pets. However, it's important to note that Dobermans are powerful and athletic dogs that require a lot of exercise and mental stimulation. Without enough physical and mental activity, they can become bored and destructive.

Dobermans are also very protective of their families, which makes them great watchdogs. However, this protectiveness can sometimes translate to aggression towards strangers. Proper socialization and training can go a long way in preventing this behavior.

One thing to note is that Dobermans can suffer from separation anxiety and may become destructive when left alone for long periods of time. It's important that they have plenty of toys and activities to keep them occupied, and that they are properly trained to feel comfortable when alone.

Overall, I think Doberman Pinschers can make great family pets, but they do require a lot of work and attention to ensure they are properly socialized, trained, and exercised. They can be incredibly loyal and protective dogs that will become an important part of your family. With the right owner, they can be a great choice for a family pet.

Hello,

I have owned a Doberman for several years and I can definitely say they make great family pets. One thing to keep in mind is that Dobermans are very sensitive to their owner's emotions. If their owner is anxious or stressed, the dog can pick up on those emotions and may become overprotective or anxious themselves.

Dobermans also tend to be very active dogs and require plenty of exercise to keep them healthy and happy. Regular runs, walks, and active play sessions are a must, and they can benefit from additional training and activities that challenge their minds, such as agility courses and obedience training.

It's also important to note that Dobermans are very smart and independent animals. They require a confident and assertive owner who can provide strong leadership and training. Dobermans need to be socialized from a young age with people, other dogs, and animals to prevent them from becoming aggressive and overprotective.

Overall, Dobermans can make wonderful family pets if they are properly trained and socialized. They are loyal, intelligent, and protective dogs that can be great with children if taught how to behave around them. However, they require a lot of attention and exercise, and can be prone to separation anxiety if left alone for too long.

Hi,

I have a Doberman and I can definitely say that they can make great family pets. They are intelligent, loyal, and protective of their family. However, as with any dog breed, it also depends on the individual personality of the Doberman.

My Doberman is very friendly with children and has never shown any aggression towards them. However, it's important to remember that Dobermans can be quite energetic and require a lot of exercise, particularly as puppies. It's important to make sure that they get enough physical and mental stimulation to prevent any destructive behavior.

Overall, I would say that if you have the time and energy to dedicate to a Doberman, they can make wonderful family pets. Just make sure to do your research, get to know the individual dog's personality, and establish yourself as the pack leader.

Hope this helps!

Hi there,

I have owned a Doberman Pinscher for a few years and I would say they can make great family pets. Dobermans are eager to please, intelligent and protective of their owners, which can make them great watchdogs. However, they have a high prey drive and may see small children, cats or other small animals as prey, so it’s important to socialize them from a young age and supervise them around smaller pets and kids.

Dobermans can be very active dogs and require a lot of exercise each day. They love to run, play and enjoy long walks, so if you are not an active person, this breed may not be the right fit for you. However, if you are active and looking for a loyal and strong-willed companion, a Doberman can be an excellent choice.

One thing to keep in mind is that Dobermans can be prone to separation anxiety when left alone for too long, so it’s important to make sure they have plenty of toys and activities to keep them occupied, and to train them to feel comfortable when alone.

Overall, I think Dobermans can make great family pets with the right owner who is willing to put in the time and effort to provide them with proper training, exercise, and socialization.

Hi everyone,

I own a Doberman and I can definitely say they make great family pets. However, there are a few things to consider before bringing a little Dobie into your home.

Dobermans are very intelligent and require a lot of mental stimulation. They can become bored quickly and may resort to destructive behavior if not given enough attention. Be prepared to spend plenty of time playing and training your dog.

In terms of temperament, Dobermans are typically very loyal to their owners, but can be wary of strangers. Proper socialization is important to ensure that your dog is comfortable around other people and animals.

Training is also crucial for this breed. Dobermans are strong-willed and need strong leadership from their owners. You will need to establish yourself as the leader of the pack if you want to avoid any behavioral problems.

Dobermans are also high-energy dogs and require plenty of exercise. This breed is not for someone who is looking for a couch potato. They love to run and play, and need plenty of space to do so.

Overall, Dobermans can make great family pets with the right owner. They are loyal, intelligent, and protective dogs, but require plenty of attention and exercise. Make sure you are prepared to commit to the time and effort required to properly care for this breed before bringing them into your home.

Hello everyone,

I have owned a Doberman for a few years and I can attest that they can make great family pets. Dobermans have a loving and playful personality, and can be affectionate towards children. However, they can also be wary of strangers, which can make them good watch dogs. They can also be trained to be protective of their owners, which is a plus if you want a dog that can also act as a protector.

Dobermans need plenty of exercise and stimulation to burn off their energy. They love running, playing and require daily walks to keep them fit. However, if you have a smaller living space, they can adapt well as long as they are well exercised.

One point to note is that Dobermans can develop separation anxiety if left alone for long periods of time. If you have a busy schedule, it's important to make sure your dog is provided with sufficient toys and activities to keep them occupied while you are away.

Overall, I believe a Doberman Pinscher can make an excellent family dog with the right training and socialization. They are loyal, protective and affectionate, and can fit right into a family dynamic.
