Q:

Can a first-time dog owner (who is extremely active) get a Doberman?

Hello everyone,

I'm a first-time dog owner and I've been thinking about getting a Doberman for a while now. I'm extremely active and I love to exercise, hike, and run. I've done some research on Dobermans and from what I've found, they are a very active breed that require a lot of exercise and mental stimulation.

However, I've also read that they can be quite strong-willed and require a firm and experienced owner. As a first-time dog owner, I'm wondering if it's too much of a challenge for me to take on a Doberman.

I'm willing to put in the time and effort to properly train and care for my dog, but I want to make sure that I'm making the right decision. Can anyone offer some advice or personal experience with Dobermans as a first-time dog owner? Would you recommend this breed for someone who is extremely active but new to dog ownership?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi everyone,

I've owned Dobermans in the past, and I have to agree with the other users who have emphasized how much work they take. They are high-energy dogs that require plenty of training and mental stimulation.

As an active person, a Doberman would be perfect for you, but it's important to ascertain your level of activity to see if you fit the bill. Dobermans are smart dogs that require plenty of mental and physical activity to keep them content. This includes regular walks, trips to the beach, and outdoor activities.

In contrast to what other users have said, I think a Doberman can be a good choice for a first-time dog owner. Nevertheless, it's crucial that you take time to research the breed, study their unique traits and habits to appreciate what you're getting into. They have a penchant for chewing, alarm barking, and guarding which requires early and consistent training.

Finally, I concur with user 4 who insisted on the no tail or ear docking practice. Not only is it unnecessary, but it also causes needless pain.

All in all, if you can commit to providing your Doberman with the exercise, training, and love that this breed needs, I say go for it. Dobermans are amazing dogs that will fill your life with joy and love if you give them the chance.

Dear forum members,

As a long-time Doberman enthusiast, I must say that getting a Doberman as your first dog can be both rewarding and challenging. While the breed is well known for its loyalty and athleticism, they require a lot of work and may not be the best choice for a new dog owner.

Dobermans can be quite stubborn, territorial and emotionally sensitive, making it important for the owner to train them using positive reinforcement to avoid harmful behaviour. Understanding their behaviour and conditioning them properly is essential in their journey from pup to adult.

Having said that, this breed can be a joy for those who invest time in its development. Dobermans thrive in environments that provide ample space to release their built-up energy. As an active person, there will be plenty of opportunities to give your Doberman the exercise and mental activity it requires to maintain a healthy relationship between owner and pet.

If your heart is set on getting a Doberman, then I recommend you research and pick a reputable breeder in your area. Also, make sure you register the pup and take him/her for regular vet checkups to monitor his/her health.

In conclusion, it's important to weigh the pros and cons of owning a Doberman as a first-time dog owner. With the right tools and training methods, you and your dog can be happy and healthy companions. Good luck and choose wisely!

Hello everyone,

I have been a proud owner of a Doberman for several years now, and I have to say that it's been quite an adventure! As an extremely active person, getting a dog was crucial to me, and a Doberman seemed like the perfect choice.

However, as many other users have pointed out, getting a Doberman as a first-time dog owner can be quite daunting, but it's not impossible. I would say that the most important characteristic to cultivate as a Doberman owner is consistency. Dobermans are smart dogs that require adequate training, regardless of your level of experience.

I would also suggest being ready for a dog that requires rigorous exercise on a daily basis. I can't emphasize this enough - Dobermans are high-energy dogs that need to release pent-up energy consistently to remain healthy.

That said, Dobermans are loyal, affectionate dogs that can bring a great deal of joy to your life. With the right training, supervision, and care, they can make for excellent companions. So, if you're up for the challenge, I say go for it!

Finally, I'd advise against going with a breeder who recommends docking a Doberman's tail or ears. It's unnecessary and can be quite painful to the dog. Choose a breeder who prioritizes the dog's welfare over aesthetic preferences.

Good luck!

Hey there,

As someone who was once a first-time dog owner and now has a Doberman, I can say that it is definitely doable! Dobermans are an amazing breed and if you are willing to put in the time and effort to train them, they can be wonderful companions.

That being said, it is important to understand that Dobermans are a strong-willed breed and can be quite challenging at times. I would highly recommend doing plenty of research and possibly seeking out the help of a professional trainer to ensure that you are setting yourself and your dog up for success.

In terms of being an extremely active person, a Doberman would be a great fit! They need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy. Just make sure you are able to provide them with the necessary exercise they need on a daily basis.

Another thing to consider is that Dobermans can be quite protective of their owners and their home. This is something that can be managed through training, but it's important to be aware of and prepared for.

Overall, I think a Doberman could be a great fit for you as a first-time dog owner. Just make sure you are ready to put in the time and effort needed to properly train and care for them. Good luck!

Hello there,

As someone who has owned a Doberman for years, I would say that getting one as a first-time dog owner who is extremely active is a monumental task. Dobermans are a wonderful breed, however training them can be an arduous process. Their loyalty is unrivaled, but the trade off is that they are high energy dogs that need a lot of engagement to avoid boredom.

Dobermans also grow quickly and can become quite large within a few months, making it important for an owner to be strong and firm with them, especially when they have not been trained with proper manners. Furthermore, they have sensitive stomachs and need to maintain a healthy diet to avoid health complications.

I'm not trying to discourage you from getting a Doberman, but it's important for you to acknowledge that they are high maintenance pets that require a lot of attention, training and exercise. If you're willing to devote enough time and resources to properly care for a Doberman, they will repay you with faithfulness and affection.

To ensure that you're ready for this task, I would suggest meeting with a few Doberman breeders and dog trainers to get tips on what it's like to own one. This can also help you to select a pup that will fit perfectly into your lifestyle.

Good luck!

Greetings everyone,

I have been training and working with Dobermans for many years, and I must say, they are a truly special breed. They have heaps of energy, and as an active person, you will have no shortage of activities to keep them going.

As a first-time dog owner, getting a Doberman can certainly be challenging, but with the right resources and dedication, it can be a great experience. Consistent training from the beginning, and early socialization with other dogs and humans can nip any future behavior issues in the bud.

Remember, Dobermans are not for everyone, and it's important to be aware of the breed's characteristics before making a choice. For instance, they are very protective of their owners, which can be either a blessing or a challenge depending on your current living situation.

Another thing to note is that Dobermans have short coats that require minimal maintenance. However, they shed quite a bit, which might be something to consider if anyone in your home has allergies.

In conclusion, Dobermans are a great breed for anyone who loves being active and can provide them the necessary exercise and training that they need. That said, it's important to study the breed, and consider your lifestyle before taking the plunge. If you decide to get a Doberman, their loyalty and energy will make them an excellent companion who will reward you with endless love and affection.
