Hello everyone,
I'm considering getting a Doberman as a guard dog and I'm wondering if they would make good protectors. I live in a relatively safe neighborhood, but I would feel more secure if I had a dog that could protect me and my home if necessary.
I've heard mixed opinions about Dobermans as guard dogs. Some people say that they are aggressive and fiercely loyal, while others say that they are too friendly and not intimidating enough to deter intruders.
I would love to hear from anyone who has experience with Dobermans as guard dogs. Are they effective at protecting their owners and homes? Are they easy to train to be guard dogs? Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your help!

Hey there,
I just want to add to the discussion as someone who had a not-so-great experience with a Doberman as a guard dog. My brother had a Doberman named Duke who was trained to be a guard dog, but he was not properly socialized and ended up being very aggressive towards everyone who wasn't in our immediate family.
Duke would growl and bark at anyone who came near our property, including delivery people and even some of our neighbors. It made it very difficult for us to have visitors over, and we were always afraid that he would bite someone.
Additionally, Duke was very hard to control when he was in guard mode. He would pull on his leash and was difficult to restrain, which made it hard to take him out in public places like parks or beaches.
I think in general Dobermans have a reputation for being good guard dogs, but it really depends on how they are trained and socialized. I would caution anyone considering a Doberman as a guard dog to make sure they are willing and able to invest the time and effort necessary to properly train and socialize them. Otherwise, you could end up with a dog that is more of a liability than a protector.
Just my two cents.
