Q:

Is a Doberman a good pick for a first dog?

Hi everyone,

I have always loved dogs and I am thinking about getting one for myself. However, I have never had a dog before so I am not sure which breed would be a good pick for a first-time dog owner like me.

I have heard a lot of good things about Dobermans, and I think they are really cool-looking dogs. However, I am not sure if they are a good fit for a first-time dog owner. I live in an apartment with my girlfriend, and we both work full-time so the dog would have to be left alone during the day.

Can anyone give me some advice on whether a Doberman is a good pick for a first dog, and if so, how to make sure I am able to provide it with the care and attention it needs given my living and work situation? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hi there,

As a Doberman owner myself, I would advise against getting a Doberman as a first dog. While they are awesome dogs and very loyal and protective, they are also quite high-maintenance and require a lot of attention, training and exercise. They are very intelligent dogs and need a lot of mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy.

Living in an apartment and working full-time might also not be the best situation for a Doberman. They need a lot of exercise and space to run around, and leaving them alone for long periods of time might lead to destructive behavior or anxiety issues.

If you are set on getting a Doberman, I would recommend doing a lot of research beforehand, and maybe even considering getting a slightly older dog who has already been trained and socialized. You should also make sure that you have the time and resources to provide your Doberman with enough exercise and attention, which might mean hiring a dog walker or attending training classes.

Overall, while Dobermans are amazing dogs, they are probably not the best choice for a first-time dog owner in an apartment with a full-time job. I hope this helps!
