Hi everyone,
I am considering getting a Doberman and I have heard that they can be very protective of their family and home. While I appreciate their protective instincts, I also want a dog that is well-behaved in social situations and can interact with other people and dogs without being aggressive.
My question is, will socialising a Doberman make it less protective? I don't want to completely diminish their protection instinct, but I also don't want them to be overly aggressive or difficult to manage in social settings.
Has anyone had experience socialising a Doberman while still maintaining their protective nature? Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hello there,
I own a Doberman who is very protective of our family and property, but also very friendly and well-behaved in social situations. I believe that socialisation is the key to achieving this balance.
What worked for us was starting socialisation as early as possible. When our Doberman was a puppy, we exposed him to different people, dogs, and environments. We also enrolled him in puppy classes, which helped him learn basic obedience and how to behave around other dogs and people.
As he grew older, we continued to socialise him by taking him to different places and introducing him to new people and dogs. We also provided him with consistent training to reinforce his social skills and keep him well-behaved in social settings.
I agree with the other responses in this thread that socialisation will not diminish your Doberman's protective instincts, but rather, it will give them the confidence and skills to be protective in an appropriate manner.
Of course, each dog is different, and the socialisation process will also depend on your dog's individual temperament and behaviour. It's important to have patience and be consistent with your training, and seek advice from a professional if needed.
Overall, socialisation is an essential part of raising a well-behaved and protective Doberman. With proper training and exposure to different situations, your Doberman can be your loyal protector and friendly companion at the same time.
