Q:

Would you prefer a Chihuahua or a Doberman Pinscher as a good pet to be around children?

Hi everyone,

I am looking to adopt a dog for my family and I am torn between getting a Chihuahua or a Doberman Pinscher. I have two children, one is 5 years old and the other is 9 years old. I want a pet that can be around my kids without any issues and would also be a great companion for them.

On one hand, I have heard that Chihuahuas are great with children and are very sociable pets. However, they are quite small and delicate, which makes me worry about any accidental injuries that could happen while playing with my children.

On the other hand, I have read that Doberman Pinschers are quite intelligent and obedient pets. They are also great protectors and have a great reputation for being loyal pets. However, their size and strength makes me slightly hesitant about getting them around my children.

So, which of these two breeds do you think would make a better pet for my family? I would really appreciate your suggestions and any personal experiences you may have had with these breeds.

Thank you in advance!

Hello everyone,

I have owned both a Chihuahua and a Doberman Pinscher, and I would recommend a Doberman as the better pet for families with children. Dobermans are very intelligent, loyal and affectionate pets that form strong bonds with their owners. They are also very energetic, which makes them perfect pets for children who have lots of energy to burn.

When we adopted our Doberman, she was just a puppy, and we made sure to socialize and train her properly from the beginning. As a result, she grew up to be an extremely well-behaved and gentle dog that loved to play with children. Our Doberman was always patient with my children and their friends, and she enjoyed being part of all the family activities.

While some might worry that Dobermans are too strong and large to be safe around small children, I believe that with proper training and management, they can be great pets for families. However, it is true that Dobermans can be quite protective of their children, so some may prefer to choose a smaller breed if they are concerned about their dog's protective instincts.

Ultimately, the decision of which breed to choose will depend on your individual preferences and needs. Both Chihuahuas and Doberman Pinschers can be great pets, so choose the breed that best suits your family's lifestyle and personality.

Best of luck with your pet search!

Hello,

I have had experience with both Chihuahuas and Doberman Pinschers, and I would personally recommend a Chihuahua as the better choice for families with children, particularly those with younger kids. Chihuahuas are generally known for being bubbly, playful, and affectionate dogs that form close bonds with their human families.

When my children were young, we adopted a Chihuahua who quickly became an important part of our family. Our dog was incredibly patient and gentle around my children, even when they were loud, boisterous, or a bit too rough in their playtime. Chihuahuas are also low-maintenance dogs that don't require a lot of exercise or grooming, which made them the perfect fit for our busy household.

In contrast, while Doberman Pinschers are often touted as loyal and protective dogs, their size and energy level can be challenging for some families. They can quickly become too much for young kids to handle, and many Dobermans have a tendency to be overly protective around strangers.

Of course, every dog is unique, and as others have mentioned, it's important to choose a breed that fits your family's individual needs and lifestyle. Regardless of which breed you choose, make sure to give your dog plenty of socialization and training from an early age - this will help ensure that they grow up to be well-behaved, friendly dogs.

Best of luck in your search for the perfect family pet!

Hello,

I've had experience with both Chihuahuas and Doberman Pinschers in the past and I would recommend a Chihuahua over a Doberman if you have young children. While Dobermans can be loyal and protective, they are also quite large, strong and potentially dangerous if not trained or socialised properly.

My family chose a Chihuahua when my children were young and it was an amazing experience having him around. Chihuahuas are generally happy, energetic and friendly pets that can take part in various activities such as walks, cuddles and playtime with children without causing any harm or injury. They are also great for small homes as they are tiny enough to fit in small spaces and do not require a lot of exercise or grooming.

In personal experience, my Chihuahua bonded closely with my children and was very protective of them. He became their companion and friend, often playing and cuddling with them, while also being fearless and fiercely protective of them even around my friends and other dogs.

Overall, I think it's important to research and understand the temperament, personalities and needs of different breeds before welcoming them into your home. While a Doberman is a great protector, they may be too much dog for a family with young children whereas Chihuahuas can be a great addition, easily adapting to various living situations and becoming loyal companions.

Wishing you all the best for your search!

Hi there,

I have had experience with both Chihuahuas and Doberman Pinschers and I would personally recommend a Chihuahua for a family with young children. While Doberman Pinschers are generally great with kids, they can be quite high-energy and may knock over small children accidentally while playing. Moreover, Dobermans have a natural protective streak which means they may get overly protective of your kids around strangers, which can lead to some overprotective issues.

On the other hand, Chihuahuas are small and delicate which can make them fragile pets. However, with proper training and socialization, they can learn to be great with children. In my personal experience, my Chihuahua has been a great companion for my children, and even though they sometimes play a bit rough, my dog has never been hurt. Moreover, Chihuahuas have a natural happy demeanor which makes them great pets to have around kids, as they are bound to cheer them up and make them smile.

Ultimately, it all depends on your children, your lifestyle, and your own comfort levels - but in my opinion, Chihuahuas are generally better suited for families with young children due to their size and temperament.

Hope this helps!

Hello everyone,

I'm chiming in on this discussion as someone who has had experience with both Chihuahuas and Doberman Pinschers. In my opinion, there is no clear-cut answer as to which breed is better suited for families with children. It really depends on the individual dog and how well it has been trained and socialized.

I had a Doberman Pinscher when my children were young, and he was a great pet. He was naturally protective, but also very gentle and patient with my kids. On the other hand, I've seen Chihuahuas that were quite aggressive and hostile towards children, so it really just depends on the individual dog.

In my opinion, the most important thing is to ensure that whichever breed you choose is trained and socialized properly. This can help prevent potential problems and ensure that the dog interacts safely with your children. It's also important to supervise interactions between your children and the dog, especially when they are young.

Ultimately, every dog is different, and you need to choose a breed that fits your lifestyle and family situation. If you have young children, it's important to choose a dog that is patient, gentle, and well-behaved. This can be either a Chihuahua or a Doberman Pinscher, as long as they have been properly trained and socialized.

Hope this helps!

Hello,

I have experience with both Chihuahuas and Doberman Pinschers and I would personally recommend a Doberman Pinscher for a family with young children, granted that the dog is properly trained and socialized to be around kids. Dobermans are known for their loyalty and protective nature, which can make them great family pets.

In my own experience, I had a Doberman Pinscher when my children were young and he was an amazing pet. My dog was patient, loving, and gentle with my children, and he was always protective of them when they were out for walks or in public places. Even when my kids were roughhousing with their friends, my Doberman never once got angry or aggressive with them. In fact, he kept a close eye on them to make sure they were safe at all times.

That being said, Doberman Pinschers are larger and stronger dogs, which means that they may accidentally knock over small children while playing. It is important to train them well so they can be gentle with young kids. With proper training, however, these dogs can be great companions for children.

In the end, it's important to consider your lifestyle and the temperament and size of the breed before choosing a dog to bring into your home. Both Chihuahuas and Doberman Pinschers can make great pets, but it all depends on your personal preferences and comfort level with each breed.

Hope this provides a balanced perspective on the matter!
